The Role of the Education Committee at APC

The Education Committee supports one of APC’s most essential goals: helping members grow, lead, and feel confident in their roles. Whether it’s preparing new stewards, sharing best practices, or offering support through unfamiliar situations, the committee exists to ensure members are never navigating union work alone. As the committee members shared, education is how knowledge is passed on, and how solidarity is built.

Education Committee Mission Statement

The mission of the APC Education Committee is to provide training on union-related topics to the APC community. The committee is responsible for the development and implementation of training materials and workshop presentations.

A few of the Committee members share their thoughts below:

Daryl R. Evans – Committee Chair

Graduation Specialist, College of Business Administration and Public Policy, CSU Dominguez Hills
Chief Steward, Dominguez Hills Chapter

  • Years with CSU: Since 1997
  • Years with APC: Since 2000
  • Years as a Steward: Since 2001
  • Years on the Education Committee: 5 years
  • Years as Chair: 3 years

Why he joined the Education Committee:

“Education is why we’re here at CSU, to help others learn. That applies to our union too. I believe in training the next generation of stewards and leaders, because Juno and I won’t be here forever. We need to make sure others are prepared.”

What he wants members to know:

“My goal is to make sure we’re ready for anything, even a strike, if it ever came to that. Right now, we aren’t prepared. If we’re ever going to be in that position, we should have everything in place so we’re not scrambling. That starts with education. We also need more members involved so we can share knowledge across campuses.”

Janette Hyder

MSI Counselor & Senior Career Post-Graduation Coordinator, CSU Fullerton
Chief Steward, Fullerton Chapter

  • Years with CSU: 28 years as a professional, plus time as a student
  • Years with APC: Over 25 years
  • Years as a Steward: More than 25 years
  • Years on the Education Committee: Off and on over many years

Why she joined the Education Committee:

“I love learning and sharing knowledge with other stewards. A lot of what we do is learned through experience, you can’t always find the answer in the contract. I enjoy helping others grow and empowering them to make confident decisions. It’s also a chance to have meaningful dialogue, especially when our campuses face unique situations.”

What she wants members to know:

“We’re a resource. You don’t have to have all the answers, and you’re not expected to. Even those of us who’ve been here over 20 years still reach out for help. We rely on each other. That’s what makes this union strong, knowing we can support one another and that no one is alone in this work.”

Jennifer Manqueros

Transfer Specialist, CSU Dominguez Hills
Steward, CSUDH Chapter

  • Years with CSU: 5 years
  • Years with APC: 5 years
  • Years as a Steward: 2 years

Why she joined the Education Committee:

“I was drawn to this committee because I have a genuine passion for teaching others about APC and the value of union membership. When members are informed about their rights, they gain confidence and know exactly who to turn to for support. This committee’s mission aligns perfectly with my commitment to empowering colleagues through education.”

What she wants members to know:

“Being part of APC means having rights, protections, and a collective voice in the workplace. The more informed we are, the stronger we become as a union. Education helps us stand together and advocate for fairness, equity, and respect.”

Juana Reyes

Graduate and TSP Coordinator in the Office of Admissions, CSU Dominguez Hills
Steward, CSUDH Chapter

  • Years with CSU: 9 years
  • Years with APC: 9 years
  • Years as a Steward: Since 2020

Why she joined the Education Committee:

“I joined because educating our members is an important part of our responsibilities as stewards. To be stronger as a union, members need to understand what we do and how we can support them.”

What she wants members to know:

“We’re here to assist in whatever way we can. Sometimes that means answering a question, other times it might just be going for a walk and listening. No matter what, we’re here to help.”
