California May Revise Budget

California May Revise Budget title

Dear Colleague,

The release of the California May revise on Wednesday has left many of us wondering about its impact on the CSU and APC.

Governor Newsom has proposed to reduce the amount cut from the CSU from 7.95% ($375.2 million) to 3% ($143.8 million), and to defer this year’s compact funding ($252 million) until fiscal year 2026-2027. This proposed improvement is an acknowledgment from our State leaders of the importance the University has in shaping the future of California and its contributions to the State and beyond.

Most importantly, this partial but important budgetary victory demonstrates the influence of the joint advocacy work of APC and its labor allies in Sacramento. The CSU budget allocation for the 2025-2026 fiscal year will not be fully settled until sometime this summer or, even the fall, which means our campaign to properly fund the University will be ongoing for the next several months.

APC is taking a cautious approach to the latest budget news and will continue its work of advocacy on behalf of the University, our students and Unit 4 employees in particular.  Once the budget bill is passed (June 15), we will have a clearer picture of the CSU’s financial standing, which will in turn inform our future bargaining negotiations.

Many thanks to those of you who wrote to your State Legislators and the Governor during this last campaign; your individual message may well have tipped the scale in favor of better funding for the CSU.

In Union,
Dagoberto Argueta
APC President
