Recruitment Bonus Program

APC members can help strengthen the union by recruiting new members year-round and earn a bonus in the process. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about how the recruitment bonus works. If you have additional questions, contact the Organizing Committee.

How much do you make on each referred member – $50 for each member recruited, and there is no limit to how many members you may recruit. After $600 in bonuses in one calendar year, the recruiter will receive a 1099 tax form.

How often the bonuses paid out – Recruiter Bonuses are awarded every month after the database closes.

How do you get paid – Currently, recruiters get a check mailed to them.

When do you get paid – Depending on the number of recruiter checks that need to be processed, it could take few weeks for recruiters to receive their checks in the mail.

Can you recruit only on your own campus? Generally, stewards recruit new members on their campuses, but there is nothing preventing stewards from recruiting new members at any other campus. Members of the Organizing Committee recruit on all campuses.

Can you recruit temporary employees – It is generally more difficult to recruit temporary employees since their employment is usually on a yearly basis and they sign a new contract each year. They will eventually be permanent if they are still in the same position upon their 4th year of employment (according to the current CBA). We emphasize that temporary employment was “forever” in the past and that the unions’ efforts have led it to be 5 years initially and now it is 4 years until permanent employment. We continue to strive to reduce this time frame even further. We also emphasize our collective strength helps us fight for less temporary employment at the CSU since we all know that we do not do “temporary work.”

What to say to potential members – We encourage recruiters to get to know their new employees. We share the contract with them. We emphasize the importance of collective bargaining and strength at the bargaining table. We explain that “we” are all the union, not just the stewards or officers. We inform them that by joining they get the right to vote for our contract ratification, steward elections and officer elections. Also, that they want to keep their rights and by not joining, they give all their rights away to their managers.

What to do if two members are trying to recruit the same employee – It does happen since stewards can meet the new employee at their New Employee Orientation and then they can be approached by fellow employees in their workplace or even members of the Organizing Committee. We ask that the new employee decide to put down anyone that they feel comfortable with on the Recruiter space, or no one at all. It really is up to the new employee.

Want to grow APC’s collective power and earn a little extra for your efforts? Start by connecting with new employees, sharing why you joined APC, and encouraging them to be part of our union’s future. Your voice makes a difference.
